What is operations technology?

Operations technology (OT), more commonly known as operational technology, refers to the hardware, software, and processes used to monitor and control physical devices, processes, and events in industrial or infrastructure settings. OT systems are used to optimize and automate operations, such as manufacturing, transportation, energy distribution, and building management.

OT differs from information technology (IT) in that it is primarily concerned with physical processes rather than data processing. OT systems are designed to monitor and control equipment and processes in real-time, often in harsh or remote environments, whereas IT systems are typically used to manage data and communication networks.

Examples of OT systems include supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), distributed control systems (DCS), and building automation systems (BAS). These systems can provide real-time data and control, enabling operators to improve efficiency, safety, and reliability.
